April 2008: Pureness of Heart

We often speak about the importance of not polluting our environment (with garbage, toxic waste) or our bodies (with junk food). Here we learn that in order to see God, we have to clean up our hearts as well - of more than just cholesterol! Pure hearts are focused on God, not on personal gain or on false images of God. What we want can sometimes get in the way of what is good for us and of being able to see and hear God. Or, we can get so distracted or jaded by the brokenness in the world, with violence and hate and rampant consumerism, that we don’t notice God is at work in the world as well. Jesus reminds us to remove whatever junk or barriers are clogging our hearts, blocking our vision of God.

Spring-cleaning. Spring is a time of renewal. Just like homes and gardens need to be cleared of debris, we need to do a personal spring-cleaning to make room for new life.
Reflection
What does a personal spring-cleaning mean to you? What do you need to do to make room for God - to be able to see and experience God? What clutter (physical, mental, spiritual) do you need to remove? What needs polishing? What needs airing? What is blocking new life? |
