May 2008: Peace
Ever watch a little child’s face light up as they reach for a hug? However awkward you may feel, it’s almost impossible not to respond to their trusting innocence and be uplifted. If ever there was an image for peacemaking, this is it. No deceitfulness. No personal agenda. Just pure self-giving and appreciation for the other person.
We tend to build up walls (both real and imaginary) around ourselves, our families, and sometimes our countries. Being a peacemaker means breaking through these walls, letting down our guard and really making yourself present to the other person. It takes strength and courage to do this – and it is the Holy Spirit who gives us the gifts of courage and wisdom to make peace possible.

During the sign of peace at mass, sincerely greet a stranger or someone with whom you have had a disagreement.
Reflection
Why do you think there is a “sign of peace” during mass? Consider when the sign takes place. Is there any significance in the timing? What does this say to you about mass and the Eucharist? |
