2010 OCY Workshop Series
Contemporary Music - Opportunities and Challenges for Youth Ministry and Liturgy

Beginning with the earliest days of Contemporary Christian Music right up to the phenomenon of Praise and Worship Music that has swept across many parts of the Catholic Church in recent years, this workshop will have something challenging and encouraging for everyone. In the post-Folk mass Church, new sounds rooted in contemporary popular music are at the heart of many debates regarding its use in youth ministry and liturgy. This half-day session, while not claiming to provide definitive answers, will seek to raise some key questions for people on both sides of the argument, while at the same time fostering a dialogue that deals with the Church and its relationship to culture itself.

The workshop will be led by John Dawson who for years has been a leading voice in Canada on this very issue. As a professional musician, Music Director and Program Coordinator for the Office of Catholic Youth in the Archdiocese of Toronto and member of the National Council for Liturgical Music where he serves as a contemporary music specialist, Dawson brings a unique and informed perspective to this issue. Please join us for a day of thought provoking and lively discussion.

**PLEASE NOTE: this workshop will be primarily discussion based, focusing on larger pastoral, cultural and liturgical issues. It will NOT be a skills session for repertoire development.
