Eucharistic Adoration

We live in a society that loves to get things done. We live busy lives and sometimes forget the importance of reflection and adoration. The theme of World Youth Day 2005 is “We have come to worship Him” (Matthew 2:2). Like the three magi we need to step away from our familiar, hectic routines, humble ourselves before Jesus, and sit at his feet.

Pope John Paul II encouraged Christians regularly to visit Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament. It is a theme that Benedict XVI has continued.

During adoration you have the opportunity to pray before the very presence of Christ. You can have “face-to-face” time with Jesus to recite your favourite prayers or pray the rosary, read the bible, think about how you have encountered God in your day-to-day activities, or any other prayerful devotion that comes to you before Christ. You can also simply sit quietly and keep Jesus company the way you would a close friend.

You can also have an adoration service with a group. Talk with your our pastor or associate and ask them to help you organize such a service. It doesn’t have to be long. It can be a half hour or less. The following is a potential outline for an adoration service.

(please kneel)

OPENING SONG

Choose a hymn everyone knows.
Some suggestions are: from CBW III – 688, 689, 432, 68, 67, 376 / Taizé: Stay with me; Bless the Lord; We adore you, Lord Jesus Christ

O Sacrament Most Holy,
O Sacrament Divine!
All Praise and all thanksgiving,
Be every moment Thine! (Repeat 3 times)

OPENING PRAYER

My Lord Jesus Christ, it is Your great love for us that keeps You day And night present in the Blessed Sacrament, full of compassion and Love, waiting for us to visit You. I believe that You are really present in the Sacrament of the Altar. From the depths of my heart, I adore You and I thank You for the many graces You have given to me, especially for the gift of Yourself in this Sacrament, for the gift of Your Most Holy Mother as my Mother and for the privilege of visiting You in this church at this time.

(Pause for a period of silent adoration.)

Think of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. (pause for silence)

Speak to Our Lord in your own words. (pause for silence)

Make a promise to Jesus. (pause for silence)

THANKSGIVING

(Sit and relax with Jesus)

Jesus, I thank You for the gift of my life and for every moment I live. I thank You for my parents, my family, my relatives and my friends.

Jesus, I thank You for the gift of faith, the grace of my baptism, the forgiveness of my sins, the gift of receiving Your Body and Blood in the Eucharist. I thank You for the priests, religious and teachers You send to me.

(Pause to thank God for your blessings.)

SUPPLICATION

(kneel)

Jesus, I pray for peace in the world, in my family and in my heart. I ask You to bless my family and friends. I ask You to bless the poor and the homeless, the sick and the dying. I ask You to send more priests, religious, and other workers for your vineyard, to bless our Pope, and to protect the Church from all harm.

(Pause to mention your special need to Jesus.)
